Character Name: Kratos
Pantheon: Greek
Parentage: Styx & Pallas
Patronage: God of strength, might, power and sovereign
rule.

Residence: Kratos has his own set of apartments in Zeus’ temple on Olympus, in the same wing as his siblings. His decorating style is simple, neat, bordering on sparse. He likes to know where everything is so that it can be retrieved quickly. It makes his life easier. While not exactly a neat freak, he is a little emphatic about the way his personal gym is maintained, demanding that his weights be kept in a specific order.

Personality: Kratos is a pretty simple guy. He loves his family. He loves his job. He loves beer. That’s about it. Alright, perhaps he’s a little more complex when you really start looking at him.

Standing just over six and a half feet tall, Kratos is well aware that he is an imposing figure, which works well for his job, but makes his personal life a tad more challenging. He is pretty mellow overall. Maybe as a response to being surrounded by such strong
personalities, or perhaps he’s just naturally that laid back, but it takes quite a bit to rile Kratos on a personal level. Deep down, he’s a marshmallow when it comes to family and friends. With everybody else, unless you hit one of his hot buttons, he’s pretty much got a live-and-let-live sort of attitude.

Unless, of course, you are threatening any of those he holds dear. Styx and his siblings top that list. His love for them runs as deep and strong as his mother’s river, and nothing can sway him from his devotion. Any threat against his family will see Kratos turning hard and unyielding. Also sure to provoke his harsher side would be any instance of power or strength being abused, used against those weaker or unable to defend themselves. Kratos hates bullies. A few childhood experiences contributed to this bone-deep loathing. He is willing to champion perfect strangers if he feels they are being bullied.

And then there is his service to Zeus. While his loyalty is guaranteed by his vow of service, Kratos would happily be in the king’s employ even without it. Kratos may not always understand, or even agree, with Zeus’ methods, but he has no doubt whatsoever that
what the king does, he does for the benefit of all. Zeus’ word is law, literally, and Kray is honored to be able to uphold it and serve justice.

Unlike some of his siblings, Kratos does not revel in battle. He doesn’t even particularly like to fight. Truthfully, he’d really rather not hurt anybody if he can help it. However, he understands the necessity of having to use the gifts he was given. He is Strength, and he views it as his responsibility to use his position wisely and for the benefit of all, the king first and foremost.

Because he doesn’t particularly enjoy being violent, when he has duties to perform that are less than palatable, he attempts to do them as efficiently as possible. Doing the job right the first time means he won’t have to do it again, and therefore not have to
deal with the unpleasantness a second time. But it would be a mistake to think that just because he might not like some of his tasks that he can be dissuaded from doing them. The phrase “between a rock and a hard place” was invented for Kratos. Once he has chosen his course of action, it would take dynamite to get him to change his path. His devotion to duty goes hand in hand with his personal loyalty, and he is simply unshakable in his fidelity.

History: Kratos’ very first perfectly clear memory is of a small kitten, lying lifeless in his hands. How young he was, he can’t recall exactly, but he was quite small himself. But even then, he was already physically stronger than most adults. In his enthusiasm to hug the kitten, he had inadvertently crushed it, and the realization that he had caused the loss of life made a huge impact on Kratos. Never again did he forget the destruction his own hands could create, and for a long time, he was careful about how he touched anything lest he cause damage.

He also became more aware of how others touched things, and the damage they caused, coming to the conclusion that sometimes the physical is not the worst pain that can be inflicted. Emotional pain can be just as bad, if not worse. Kray’s hatred for bullies started with his own father. That his parents’ relationship was contentious was an understatement, and even in the best of times, and he always felt the undercurrents. He tried to aid his mother and siblings as best as he was able, being quiet and helpful, attempting to ease the tension. He wasn’t sorry at all to have Pallas removed from their lives.

But losing one bully in his life did not mean that there was no longer any stress. Once Styx had moved them in with Zeus, Zelos began what felt like a campaign of irritation. Every time Kratos turned around, his older brother was there, making his life as difficult as possible. Ever aware of his need to keep his strength in check, it took several years of this abuse before Kratos finally lost his temper. In a scene that will never leave his mind, Kratos threw his brother from the top of Zeus’ temple. The second that he let go of Zelos, he felt guilty, but it did get him the space that he needed and allowed him to eventually grow close to his brother again.

That closeness with his brother, and his sisters, was what helped Kratos get through some of his more difficult jobs. There was never any hesitation in doing as he was commanded. If Zeus said jump, Kratos never even stopped to ask “how high?” he simply took
the leap. But occasionally, the things he had to do caused him some internal, personal struggle.

After all, it wasn’t as if he wanted to make Hephaestus bind his friend to a rock. And if Prometheus would stop defying Zeus, Kray might even like the guy. But when Hephaestus balked, Kratos tried to point out that it would be better for all of them if he’d just get it done quickly. Then the guy started whining, and Kray had to force the issue. He hated to have to do that, but his job was his job, and Zeus wouldn’t have told him to get it done if it wasn’t important. That history remembers him as a jerk bothers him some, but his family was there for him and it’s their opinion that mattered most to him.

Especially Bia’s. Growing up with Rivalry and Victory wasn’t exactly easy, and Strength found himself naturally drawn more towards Force. Bia never expected anything of him or wanted him to be more than what he was, or if she did, he never got that feeling. That his feelings for her grew to be something deeper than friendship was something he barely admitted to himself, and never to her. If he didn’t say it aloud, he didn’t have to hear her reject it. That was easier to live with. Most of the time.

Every once in a while, Kratos needed a bit of time to himself to deal with the emotional stuff that has no other outlet, ranging from his unrequited crush to some of the things that build up after some of his jobs. Recently, he took one of his rare vacations telling nobody where he was going. Mostly because he didn’t really want anybody to know that he went to Nashville. (Kratos loves country music.)

When he returns, he’s going to be devastated to learn what has happened in his absence. And that he’s failed his king.
