1. NO GODMODING OR METAGAMING.
In a game full of gods, this is particularly applicable. We don't think we should have to tell you not to do this, but for the sake of argument: any actions that affect a character you do not control (or the property of a character you do not control) are a no no. If you have some doubts that you might be brushing up against that line, clear it with the other player first. Any OOC (out of character) knowledge that is applied IC (in character) is also a no no. You're smart. You already know this, but now we've said it, so we're all good.
2. YOU MUST BE 18 TO PLAY IN OUR GAME.
Mythology can deal with some adult themes, and in order to not get in trouble with anybody's parents, we have to limit our game to adults. Besides, we really don't want to explain how Zeus got Danae pregnant. (Though if you're on the internet, you can probably find video replications.)
3. ALL ROLEPLAY TAKES PLACE IN DEITIES DOT COM OR HISTORY DOT COM.
Character journals are to be used for posting to these communities only, not for separate roleplay. We like having a centralized area for all our players to come together, and we like to see what all the other characters are doing. We want all of our players to be part of the stories that are happening, even if it's only as the audience reading along. Only roleplay that takes place in HDC and DDC will be considered part of the game.
4. THERE ARE NO ACTIVITY CHECKS.
What, what, what? No activity checks? That is correct! You are an adult, and we're not babysitters. As long as you are regularly active, or at the very least in contact with us so that we know you plan to be active, then you're hunky dory! However, if we notice that you are not regularly active, or if your writing partner contacts us to tell us you've dropped off the face of the earth, then we will be getting in contact with you. If we have to do that three times, we're going to have to do something about your misbehavior, up to and including removing a character.
5. CHARACTER LIMITS:
For your first six months in our game, you are allowed to have two characters. After that probationary period where you figure out if you really like our game and we decide not to cannibalize you, you can apply for one character per month until you reach five characters. You are allowed no more than four characters in any one pantheon. (You don't want to play with yourself anyway, do you? Wait... that came out wrong...) But wait, there's more! If you are an active player in good standing, you can apply to the mods for additional characters. How many? As many as you can handle. If you are playing more than five characters, you are allowed to have five per pantheon, rather than four. But know that if you cannot handle the character load, we may be required to remove characters that you are not able to keep active.
6. YOU MUST GET PERMISSION BEFORE STARTING A PLOT THAT WOULD SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECT THE ENTIRE GAME.
While we are a player driven game and we love, love, love the plots our players' clever little brains come up with, we, the mods, need to know about any huge, overreaching, or unusual story arc that will affect more than just you and your writing partner(s), or your possible future writing partner(s) if you have that planned out. Basically, don't blow up the earth kind of things. When you're dealing with gods, this can be an issue, please ask accordingly.
7. ALL PLAYERS WILL TREAT THEIR FELLOW PLAYERS WITH COURTESY AND CONSIDERATION.
To quote Wil Wheaton: Don't be a dick. Yes, this is just a game, but there are real people behind those characters, people who put in time and effort and try to treat you with courtesy and consideration. Return that favor. Or else.
IF YOU BREAK OUR RULES, YOU'LL GET A WARNING.
IF YOU IGNORE OUR WARNINGS, YOU'LL GET SPANKED.
AND WE USE A BIG PADDLE. WITH SPIKES.
These are things that are not actual rules, or are kind of unspoken things about our game. We know it can be hard sometimes trying to figure out where everything is and what goes where and how does this work, so we came up with these guidelines as to how RP generally goes on our boards.
1. TAG YOUR DDC/HDC ENTRIES IN THE SUBJECT LINE.
This is a brief note in parentheses or brackets that allows other players to know if the post is directed toward them or if it is open for any character to respond. We don't require a who, what, where summary at the beginning of the post, just the tagging in the subject line. If you feel the role play should include your character in the thread, just contact the original poster to join. (Example of a subject line with an appropriate tags: A Drunken Debacle [Open to Dionysos/anyone at his temple] or Visiting The Queen (For Hera) ) Tagging in the subject line for history posts should contain the year or general time period. (i.e.: Reputation [Versailles, 1773] (tag: Hebe) )
2. PLACE A DISCLAIMER ON ANY POST CONTAINING GRAPHIC SEXUAL/VIOLENT CONTENT.
While we would never encourage anybody to slack off while at work (we're responsible that way), we do have players that occasionally check on posts on their breaks. We also have players that have free-range children in their homes. Out of respect for them, and to avoid any hard feelings, anything that is graphic or possibly triggering should come with a disclaimer and be placed behind a cut. (If you don't know how to do an LJ cut, just ask, we will help you with that!) In addition, if you are doing something with extreme violence or sexual content, make sure your writing partner is alright with playing it out, or if they'd rather just fade to black. Some people are more comfortable than others when it comes to delving into details.
3. PAY ATTENTION TO POSTING ORDER IN GROUP THREADS.
We try to make sure that a thread doesn't run away and leave some of the participants behind. That's no fun for them. So be considerate and wait your turn. (However, if a reasonable amount of time has passed, check with your writing partners to see if they're all okay with jumping somebody that's lagging too far behind. That's no fun either.)
4. WE DO NOT ALLOW PREGNANCY PLOTS.
This is not because we don't appreciate those kinds of storylines or that we dislike children. We have legitimate gaming reasons for doing so, and we would be happy to explain them to you if you want to e-mail us to ask. But we're still going to say no. Sorry.
5. WE DO NOT ALLOW DUPLICATION OF PBS.
And once you choose your PB for a character, it cannot be changed. (Unless you have a really, really, really good reason for doing so, in which case you can ask us and we'll consider it.)
6. WE EXPECT TO BE ASKED BEFORE YOU TAKE A HIATUS.
We don't need to know you're going to Sweden for a sex change operation, or that your cat just had kittens and you want to cuddle them, or whatever your reason is that you feel you need time away from our game. Your personal life is yours to keep personal. A simple e-mail letting us know you need a bit of a break will do. We allow a hiatus of up to a month, but we think it's only fair that you ask us rather than just disappearing. That hurts our feelings. (Also, if you don't let us know you're taking a hiatus, we may think you're inactive, and we don't want that, do we?)
IF THESE GUIDELINES ARE NOT FOLLOWED,
WE WILL ASK YOU TO MAKE A CORRECTION.
IT'S NOT PERSONAL, AND WE'RE NOT MAD AT YOU.
We, the moderators reserve the right to make reasonable exceptions to the above-listed rules if circumstances warrant it. Crap happens. Sometimes people do things we have no way of anticipating. We try very hard to be fair, and every once in a while we have to bend the rules to do so.
IF YOU NEED TO CONTACT THE MODERATORS:
You've got two great ways to get in contact with us!
If you've got a general question or comment, something that's going to be a simple thing to quickly answer and/or explain, we do have a drop box for your convenience.
If your question requires a more in depth answer, you can shoot us an email to deities @gmail [dot] com. (On occasion, we may ask you to refer your drop box question to our e-mail if it's going to be a longer discussion.)
We can be pretty quick, but you might want to allow us a few days to reply. (Sometimes, life gets in the way of us doing the fun things we want to.) We like to believe we are an approachable bunch. Please do not be afraid to ask questions.
There are also mod journals:
moirai (The Fates)
urdarbrunnr (The Norns)
We do not check them regularly, but if you see either of these journals make a post? You might want to pay attention.
